The Growing Crisis of Teen Drinking: Implications for Health, Academic Success, and Social Development

Teen drinking has long been considered a rite of passage by some and ignored as a phase many minors go through. Instead this perspective overlooks lasting consequences of alcohol use during crucial years of ones life. The reality today is far more alarming: teenage drinking is no longer just a "phase" but a growing crisis that has serious implications for mental health, academic achievement, physical development, and social well-being. The scope of the problem is striking. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), nearly 60% of high school seniors report having consumed alcohol at least once, and almost 30% have engaged in binge drinking within the past month. These statistics are paving the concerning road for the future health of todays young adults. The reasons behind teen drinking are not just one sided reasons. Younger generations face far more peer pressure, fear of non-conformity, and increased access to alcohol far more than ol...

Fund the Police? How We Can Protect Our Streets And Our Future

Fund the Police? How We Can Protect Our Streets And Our Future Credit: Portland Press Herald Something must be done about police violence in this country, and it must be done quickly. For the past several years, law enforcement in our nation has been shed in a horrible light. Following the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, as well as others such as Breonna Taylor, and Walter Wallace, trust in our police has been in a steady decline. This is something we cannot stand for in our society, police play a pivotal role in keeping our homes safe. While some call for the defunding of the police, and others call for a more heightened police state, the actual solution is somewhere in the middle. Remember there are never only two options in the debate of every issue. If safer communities, better-trained police officers, and actual reforms, we need to be funding the police, not stripping them of their resources.  Police are doing far more than the headlines suggest. We always see the bad a...

The Government Can't Stop Hazing

Shower Hazing Image                   Earlier this year, Democratic representative Lucy McBath rejoiced with her colleagues when the Stop Campus Hazing Act , a bill she wrote, was passed by the house. However, these lawmakers are in for a rude awakening if they think laws like this will be able to end the hazing epidemic that has plagued America's institutions for more than a century.  Statistics show that since 2000, more than 100 hazing related deaths have occurred on college campuses. Each incident usually comes with the same outcomes- apologies, charges, and the calls for change. But public outcry and passing laws is not going to change anything. Hazing will continue to haunt our academic institutions and persist in our modern society because of impunity, tradition, and power dynamics.           According to the eBook Making the Team , the amount of reported hazing incidents has gr...

Alcohol Leads to Poor Performances in Classes Alcohol on Campus Is A major issue, Here's Why Public Intoxication on college campuses poses a significant threat to student safety, as intoxicated individuals are more likely to be involved in unwanted and possibly harmful encounters with fellow students. To protect students from these risky encounters, campuses must create stronger preventative measures that create a safer environment for all individuals.  According to a study published by The Journal of American College Health, abuse of alcohol in 2018 was higher in full-time college students ranging from ages 18 to 22 years, when compared to other people in the same age bracket. This increased usage of alcoholic substances among college students had a drastic increase in academic difficulties, high-risk sexual behavior, violence, and aggression; on top of reckless driving accidents while intoxicated. This type of behavior among students cannot be accepted. The effect tha...

The number of American citizens who rely on some sort of government assistance program to get by. According to information put out by ASPE (Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation in 2023, there was 99.1 million American citizens who relied on some sort of government assistance. This means that 1 in 3 American’s rely on our government to provide them with what they need to live. This is a problem. We cannot have a third of our country incapable of living on their own. To counteract this problem, we need to focus more on our next generation. We need to ensure that students are being taught correctly and getting the resources they need to be successful. This is especially true when dealing with kids who suffer from a learning disability. When these kids that are struggling do not receive the help...
